You’ll learn about computers, robots, telephones, televisions, cell phones, radios, and infrared devices.  In the arts section, read Native American tales, make dream catchers, create fetish necklaces, and learn more about Native American symbolism.  There are lots of activities your whole family will enjoy doing together.

In each unit, you’ll find a recommended library list, important background information about each topic, and lots of activities to choose from for kids of all ages.  Sidebars include a bunch more ideas including Additional Layers, Fabulous Facts, On The Web, Writer’s Workshop, Famous Folks, and Teaching Tips.  Printable maps and worksheets are included with each unit and may be printed as often as needed for your family or class.

Indian Legends

  • Read the story of Red Cloud, a real legendary chief of the Lakota tribe.  Then draw a portrait of the famous chief.  Use this tutorial, but after the basic face shapes are done use a portrait of Red Cloud to make it look like him.
  • Read a picture book story of an Indian Legend like “The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush” or another from your library.  Identify the story elements like setting, plot, characters, problem, and solution.  Then come up with your own modern story in this style.  Something like “how the truck got its bed” or “why the building grew so high” or “how the box learned to talk (radio or TV).”  Do a pre-writing activity where you identify all the story elements for your modern legend.  Then write the legend.
