Episode 80: Our Homeschooling Routines

Layers of Learning sisters, Karen and Michelle

The Layers of Learning Podcast with Karen and Michelle is here to help you get your whole family learning together in your homeschool. We are the sisters behind Layers of Learning. We love getting together to chat about homeschooling and this podcast is just a series of our chats. We’re inviting you to listen in on our conversations.

We both have big families, but we teach almost all of our school subjects to everyone at once. We want to help you find the joy in that too, so we talk a lot about family homeschooling. To see all of our episodes, visit our Layers of Learning Podcast Page. Join us as we explore how to have a happy, hands-on, family-style homeschool.

Our Homeschooling Routines

Your homeschool will feel easier when you find a consistent routine that helps it run on autopilot without you having to direct every single thing your kids do. We start with a morning meeting, then do our math, writing, and other daily subjects. The weekly subjects tend to come later in the day and can be totally flexible, depending on your schedule demands. We fill our afternoons with our Layers of Learning lessons, and they can be quick or run all through the afternoon, depending on what our life schedules demand. There is no right or wrong way to set up your homeschool routine, but as soon as you find one that works for you, stick to it! Don’t compare yourself with what someone else is doing. Do what works for you!

Here Are A Few Topics You’ll Hear About In This Podcast

  • A routine can exist without having a specific schedule with set times.
  • It can be helpful to start with some sort of flexible morning meeting or gathering time.
  • Getting done with the toughest subjects first can be an effective way to make sure they get done early before everyone is tired.
  • Incorporating reviews of what you’ve been learning about in small ways can help your kids retain knowledge.
  • Letting your kids choose their own electives that they are interested in can help you accomplish some of the subjects more independently.
  • Throwing in an online class or two for your kids who can work on their own can give you a little freedom to help other kids.
  • You will never find an absolutely perfect routine that you stick with completely. Routines evolve and adjust to give you fresh starts, help you adapt to your family’s needs, and keep things interesting.
