Civil War PDF

Civil War is the fourth unit in the American History course. In this unit learn about slavery in America, the abolition movement, secession, Civil War battles, and the continued oppression of black Americans after the Civil War.

This book is for adult mentors to use as a resource when planning lessons, not a textbook for students.

This unit has sections on:

• Reconstruction

Layers of Learning is activity-based and this unit guide includes many hands-on ways to learn about the Civil War. Here are a few things you will find to do inside this unit:

• Color and assemble a booklet about slavery in the antebellum South
• Paint your own background map and act out an escape on the Underground Railroad
• Make a 10th Amendment poster and discuss how states rights were an issue before and during the Civil War
• Color and cut a three part mini poster about the Dred Scott decision
• Craft an Abraham Lincoln puppet
• Color a map of Fort Sumpter and the surrounding Democrat batteries for your Book of Years
• Learn about animal mascots kept by Civil War soldiers and draw a portrait of your favorite
• Read the Emancipation Proclamation and color a map of the progress of emancipation across America
• Create two paper pockets and fill them with Black Codes and Jim Crow laws to compare and contrast

This unit, like all of Layers of Learning is pick-and-choose so the mentor can decide which books to read and which Explorations to choose from among many options.

Flexibility

This unit was written to be used for a month but contains plenty of content for many more weeks of learning if you choose. This is a pick-and-choose curriculum, meant to be cycled back to in the future when your child is older. As such, it intentionally includes far more material than you can possibly cover in a month.

Civil War is also part of the overall American History course.
