Research Paper walks older teens through a semester-long process of writing a 5-8 page researched paper with standard formats, works cited, cover pages, and all.

This is a digital pdf download.

Research Paper is not included in the Writer’s Workshop pdf bundle or the paperback book. In this special unit, teens from 15 and up use Research Paper independently to learn research, organization, writing, and citing skills in completing a 5-8 page research paper. We recommend spending a semester (about 4 months) of your Writer’s Workshop time working methodically through the Research Paper. The student will write directly inside the Research Paper unit as well as in a word processor, on notecards, and perhaps in a notebook or on loose-leaf paper. Writing research papers is an essential college preparation skill that should be learned by graduation. Complete this unit once or twice by age 18.

Print the pdf document, put it in a binder, and have your teen work through the writing process independently step by step:

  • Find a topic
  • Write a thesis
  • Find credible books and online sources
  • Make notecards
  • Organize your paper in an outline
  • Write a draft
  • Cite sources
  • Revise
  • Edit
  • Publish

Use this unit toward the end of your teen’s high school years, age 15 or older.
