Episode 79: Making Dinner & Homeschooling

Layers of Learning sisters, Karen and Michelle

The Layers of Learning Podcast with Karen and Michelle is here to help you get your whole family learning together in your homeschool. We are the sisters behind Layers of Learning. We love getting together to chat about homeschooling and this podcast is just a series of our chats. We’re inviting you to listen in on our conversations.

We both have big families, but we teach almost all of our school subjects to everyone at once. We want to help you find the joy in that too, so we talk a lot about family homeschooling. To see all of our episodes, visit our Layers of Learning Podcast Page. Join us as we explore how to have a happy, hands-on, family-style homeschool.

Making Dinner & Homeschooling

Homeschool mamas are busy! It can be hard to juggle teaching your kids AND doing all of the household tasks of motherhood. Making dinner is just one of the many things you have to worry about. There are some things we do to create balance in our homes. Often, moms feel like everything falls on their shoulders, but there are some things you can do to ease the burden. Instead of thinking of yourself as the workforce in your family, assign yourself to be the director. Create a family culture of pitching in. Part of that means creating daily routines when you work together and accomplish the household jobs that need to be done. Have them cook with you, clean with you, and learn to reliably do household tasks. Give each member of your family tasks that they are routinely responsible for. Find non-monetary ways to give your kids praise for their contributions. Check up on each task and make sure it is completed. Making everyone accountable is the way to establish good habits. Let dinnertime become a time of accountability. While you cook, your kids complete their chores. Before you eat, check up on their chores. When everyone is done, you come together for a family dinner that follows feelings of accomplishment and order in your home. Family dinners help create a strong family culture.

Here Are A Few Topics You’ll Hear About In This Podcast

  • Make sure to give yourself me-time. You need to recharge yourself if you want to be there for your family.
  • Set timers and have group clean-up times. Make it a fun challenge!
  • Clean up together every single day. Clean homes get cleaned every day.
  • Parents and kids work side by side.
  • Simplify your life. The stuff you have, the more stuff you have to take care of.
  • Check up on chores and make sure each family member is accountable for their responsibilities.
  • Give kids challenging jobs. Teach them to use a knife, the stove, a lawn mower, and power tools. True self-esteem comes from confidence and autonomy.
