Layers of Learning Unit 4-8 begins with World War I including the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, The Battle of Mons, trench warfare, technology advances, airplanes, Verdun, the Somme, the eastern front, American involvement, and the peace treaty. Then learn about the plains states including Kansas, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri. Next in science learn about earthquakes including seismometers, seismic waves, P-waves, S-waves, strike-slip faults, elastic rebound theory, Richter and moment magnitude scales, and focus and epicenters. Last, study Expressionist artists including Kadinsky, Kirchner, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Edvard Munch, Franz Marc, the Dada movement and others.

We are about to start plate tectonics, and there is so many hands-on fun things to do! I love that the units are so packed with information too. My son is excited to do the cracking continents exploration (any excuse to make cookies, haha!).
