Research Paper is not included in the Writer’s Workshop pdf bundle or the paperback book. In this special unit, teens from 15 and up use Research Paper independently to learn research, organization, writing, and citing skills in completing a 5-8 page research paper. We recommend spending a semester (about 4 months) of your Writer’s Workshop time working methodically through the Research Paper. The student will write directly inside the Research Paper unit as well as in a word processor, on notecards, and perhaps in a notebook or on loose-leaf paper. Writing research papers is an essential college preparation skill that should be learned by graduation. Complete this unit once or twice by age 18.
Print the pdf document, put it in a binder, and have your teen work through the writing process independently step by step:
- Find a topic
- Write a thesis
- Find credible books and online sources
- Make notecards
- Organize your paper in an outline
- Write a draft
- Cite sources
- Revise
- Edit
- Publish
Use this unit toward the end of your teen’s high school years, age 15 or older.

The description says this is for older teens – ages 15 and up. Can this be used for younger teens? I’m looking for something for my 13 year old 8th grader.
Layers of Learning –
It could be used for younger, advanced writers. Generally students aren’t ready for a five or ten page research paper until junior or senior year. Only you can judge if your student might be ready.

The instructions for the prewriting activities are so well done, and make a scary thing seem so manageable.

My teen used this and she learned a ton! I feel that she is prepared for college writing now and understands the research paper process.
