Here are some more activities, printables, and ideas you can add to this unit for even more learning opportunities.

Settlers

• How to draw the Mayflower
• Pilgrim unit study
• Read about the lost colony of Roanoke in one of the books below or at the NPS website.  Write your own theory of what happened.  It can be realistic (attacked by the Spanish) or out there (alien abduction).

Peru & Bolivia

• For older high school students, 16 and up, read When Rains Become Floods by Lurgio Gavilán Sánchez.  It is the story of a boy of 12 who becomes a soldier for the Shining Path, a terrorist organization in Peru.  Parents, be aware of descriptions of violence in the books. After reading discuss with a mentor or book group.  

• Color the Flag of Peru and do an activity map of Peru, both from Homeschool Creations which has a whole page of ideas to learn about Peru.
• Bolivia has an official holiday called Willkakuti, celebrated on June 21 of each year.  In Bolivia this is winter and so it is the winter solstice celebration, also known as the Andean New Year.  First, read this blog post from an American who experienced the holiday first hand.  Then watch this video about Willkakuti (it is all in Spanish, but the images and the Spanish language make it even better than if it were in English).  Finally, draw your own sunrise sketch then finish it with paint or oil pastels.  Give the painting a caption explaining Willkakuti.

• Read about sedimentary rocks and watch the video on this webpage.  Then make an illustrated notebooking page with the vocab words on the webpage.
• Make edible sedimentary rocks with cereal, chocolate chips, and M&Ms.

Native American Art

• Read about Native American rattles.  Then make your own gourd rattle. You can get dry gourds for this craft here.
• Read The Mud Pony by Caron Lee Cohen.  Then make this clay pony craft.
