Layers of Learning Unit 4-12 begins with the history of modern East Asia. We go back in time a bit and pick up the Opium Wars, Japanese Isolationism, Commodore Matthew Perry, and the Boxer Rebellion. Then we proceed into Korea under Japanese occupation, The Long March in China, the Cultural Revolution, and China today. Next, in geography, learn all about the South in the United States. We include Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. Then, in science, learn about food including testing baking powder, adsorption, searing meats, live cultures, caramelization and the Maillard process, starches, pectin, vitamins in food, and making cheese. Finally, in arts learn about Modern Art including color field painting, lyrical abstraction, minimalist art, photorealism, earth art, gestalt, grid drawing, modern sculpture, and more.
In each unit, you’ll find a recommended library list, important background information about each topic, and lots of activities to choose from for kids of all ages.
